The Markel Insurance Company asked GFI to develop a design
for the main entrance lobby of their new corporate headquarters in Richmond.
As a provider of specialty insurance products for children's activities,
Markel wanted the interiors of the new building to focus on youth. A brainstorming
session identified the themes of learning, professionalism, play and security
that should be represented in the final solution.
The resulting dynamic design portrays the positive energy and dedication
necessary for learning. Wood panels and marble floors give an air of professionalism
and security while colorful materials, transparent panels of glass and a
dynamically undulating drywall ceiling make the space playful and light.
A waterfall backdrop represents the limitlessness of being young. The individual
insurers are portrayed vividly in a massive mural in the shape of Markel's
logo. The new lobby as a whole offers a commanding presence, but also presents
comfort and tranquility to all who pass through. |
